Arms trafficking / View on Africa: poaching and illicit arms – a lethal mix

Illegal arms flows are fuelling transnational poaching and smuggling of wildlife and their products.

There’s an intricate link between the illegal arms industry and poaching. Most poachers become more dangerous once they are armed, and they often acquire weapons and ammunition illegally. At the same time, easy access to illicit arms coupled with the transnational movement of wildlife and poachers, porous borders and corruption encourage poaching in Africa.

This View on Africa is presented by Dr Nelson Alusala, Senior Researcher with the ENACT Programme on transnational organised crime in Africa. He will discuss how the uncontrolled flow of arms and ammunition facilitates transnational organised crime in wildlife and their products.
