Extortion is spreading rapidly across South Africa, harming almost every sector of the economy from informal traders to major construction projects and the provision of public services. Extortion is often accompanied by violence, with murders and massacres terrorising communities. The impact on public safety and equitable, sustainable business operations is of grave concern.
Understanding the context and drawing on international lessons may offer solutions for South Africa’s current predicament.
